Editorial overview Touché

Syrianus: On Aristotle Metaphysics 13-14 by Syrianus, published by Bloomsbury Academic on April 10, 2014, is a reprint edition comprising 192 pages in English. This work presents Syrianus’s commentary on Aristotle’s Metaphysics, specifically focusing on Books 13 and 14, where he critiques Aristotle’s polemical stance against Platonism. Syrianus, who became the head of the Academy in Athens, engages with Aristotle’s arguments regarding Form-numbers and the concept of separable number, providing a counterpoint rooted in mathematical and geometrical entities.

Readers will find an exploration of how mathematical concepts are processed in the mind, reflecting the philosophical discourse of the time. This edition contributes to the understanding of ancient Greek philosophy, particularly in the context of metaphysics and its historical development. The work not only addresses the philosophical debates of its era but also lays the groundwork for future Neoplatonist thought, influencing figures such as Proclus. The book serves as a significant resource for those interested in the intersections of mathematics, philosophy, and the history of ideas.

Official synopsis Publisher

Until the launch of this series in 1985, the 15,000 volumes of the ancient Greek commentators on Aristotle, written mainly between 200 and 600 AD, constituted the largest corpus of extant Greek philosophical writings not translated into English or other European languages.
Syrianus, originally from Alexandria, moved to Athens and became the head of the Academy there after the death of Plutarch of Athens. Syrianus attacked Aristotle in his commentary on Books 13 and 14 of the Metaphysics, just as his pupil Proclus was to do later in his commentaries on Plato. This is because in Metaphysics 13-14, Aristotle himself was being thoroughly polemical towards Platonism, in particular against the Academic doctrine of Form-numbers and the whole concept of separable number. In reply, Syrianus gives an account of mathematical number and of geometrical entities, and of how all of these are processed in the mind, which was to influence Proclus and all subsequent Neoplatonists.
