My mother spent all of five minutes deciding my Christian names, whilst drinking copious amounts of milk stout on one of her legendary benders; these being Alfred and Wilfred. With my surname being Hart, it comes as no great surprise, that when the names are linked together and shortened somewhat-Alf Hart said quickly in a Yorkshire accent, comes across as “I’ll fart,” and better still, when both Alfred and Wilfred are shortened, comes over as “Alf will fart.” I came to realise, that if I hadn’t been cursed with bad luck, I would have had no luck at all. So began my inauspicious life…
This story chronicles Alf’s adventures and escapades growing up in a tough mining town in South Yorkshire in the 1960’s. Dene Lindley lives in a small village in South Yorkshire. He enjoys being outdoors, surrounded by nature, and all her beauty. It is here where he feels totally at ease with the world. Dene is a gregarious person who has been described by his children, as a cross between Billy Connolly and Spike Milligan. He has lived with depression for over twenty years, which he caught off one of his friends whilst playing out in the garden. His characteristics and idiosyncrasies help make up a complex individual, who is always able to laugh at his misfortunes and constant bad luck.
