Humiliated and miserable he struggles to be accepted as he serves on a merchant ship carrying coal to South America. His adventures are only just beginning when he jumps ship in Valparaiso, to seek his fortune and fulfil his desire to return home and find his sweetheart Florry.

Florry believes herself abandoned and through sheer determination battles through the dangers of being a beautiful young woman alone in 19th century London. Her journeys take her to Europe and back to England. She finds a measure of happiness with the canal folk in Yorkshire, but tragedy strikes and she heads for London, determined to find out what happened to Charles.
