The Sports Issue

The Sports Issue by Cj E Jones, published by Duke University Press on April 28, 2023, is a 176-page exploration of modern sports through the lens of trans theory and studies. This edition critically examines how sports serve as a mechanism for policing bodies and deviance, challenging the notion that regulatory practices in sports are neutral. The contributors analyze various aspects of elite sports, revealing the social, political, cultural, and economic implications tied to these practices, particularly in relation to white supremacist and colonial forces.
Readers will find essays that delve into topics such as transfeminine exclusion from sports, the creation of nongender binary sports spaces, and the epistemic violence present in debates surrounding trans inclusion. By centering feminist and queer studies, this special issue aims to deepen the understanding of gender and sex within critical sports studies, moving beyond traditional analyses of gender normativity. The contributions from various authors provide a multifaceted perspective on the intersection of sports and social justice, making this work a significant addition to discussions in social science, LGBTQ+ studies, and transgender studies.
Official synopsis Publisher
This special issue draws on trans theory and studies to analyze modern sports, which the authors argue is a mechanism for policing bodies and deviance. Although governing bodies in sports claim that their regulatory practices, which include femininity certificates and a capped threshold of testosterone for female eligibility in elite sports, are neutral and serve to eliminate unfair advantages, the contributors critically examine and destabilize those practices. Authors utilize critical trans theory to reveal the social, political, cultural, and economic implications of modern and elite sports, particularly in relation to white supremacist and colonial forces. Rather than analyzing gender normativity, the contributors center feminist and queer studies to understand sports and physical recreation’s role as a powerful social force, and to deepen the understanding of gender and sex within critical sports studies. Essay topics include transfeminine exclusion from sports and dating, creating a nongender binary sports space, and epistemic violence in trans inclusion debates.
