Editorial overview Touché

The Sea Lady by H. G. Wells is a thought-provoking exploration of mermaid legends, published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform on May 12, 2015. This edition spans 82 pages and is presented in English. The narrative begins with a reflection on previous accounts of mermaids, highlighting the skepticism surrounding such tales, particularly the story of a Sea Lady from Bruges known for her remarkable skills in fancy work.

Readers will find a blend of folklore and contemporary themes as the protagonist recounts a personal encounter that challenges long-held beliefs about these mythical beings. The story delves into the complexities of belief and doubt, as well as the societal efforts to suppress the truth behind these legends. With elements of romance and fantasy woven throughout, The Sea Lady invites readers to reconsider the boundaries between reality and myth.

Official synopsis Publisher

Such previous landings of mermaids as have left a record, have all a flavour of doubt. Even the very circumstantial account of that Bruges Sea Lady, who was so clever at fancy work, gives occasion to the sceptic. I must confess that I was absolutely incredulous of such things until a year ago. But now, face to face with indisputable facts in my own immediate neighbourhood, and with my own second cousin Melville (of Seaton Carew) as the chief witness to the story, I see these old legends in a very different light. Yet so many people concerned themselves with the hushing up of this affair, that, but for my sedulous enquiries, I am certain it would have become as doubtful as those older legends in a couple of score of years.
