After a six-month search by a bulldog detective, William Burns, the two conspirators were caught and put on trial in Los Angeles. The era’s top defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, who was hired by Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor, defended them. Darrow eventually pleaded his clients guilty to save them from execution. He was himself put on trail, however, on a charge of jury bribery.
