Studies in Plato’s Metaphysics (RLE: Plato) by R. E. Allen, published by Routledge on April 28, 2014, presents a scholarly examination of Plato’s philosophical evolution, particularly regarding the Theory of Forms. This edition comprises four pages and is written in English. The book addresses whether Plato abandoned or significantly altered his views on universals, as discussed in key dialogues such as the Phaedo, Symposium, and Republic, while also considering the critical perspective offered in the Parmenides.

Readers will find a collection of twenty essays contributed by prominent philosophers from the UK and the USA, each reflecting on the implications of Plato’s later thought and the complexities of his metaphysical inquiries. The essays delve into the logical behavior of concepts and the potential shifts in Plato’s philosophy following the Parmenides, making this work a valuable resource for those interested in ancient philosophy, metaphysics, and the historical development of idealism.

Official synopsis Publisher

Did Plato abandon, or sharply modify, the Theory of Forms in later life? In the Phaedo, Symposium, and Republic it is generally agreed that Plato held that universals exist. But in Parmenides, he subjected that theory to criticism. If the criticism were valid, and Plato knew so, then the Parmenides marks a turning point in his thought. If, however, Plato became aware that there are radical differences in the logical behaviour of concepts, and the later dialogues are a record of his attempt to analyse those differences, then Platoe(tm)s thought can be said to have moved in a new and vitally important direction after the Parmenides. Studies in Platoe(tm)s Metaphysics brings together twenty essays by leading philosophers from the UK and the USA reflecting upon this important issue and upon the questions arising from it.
