Editorial overview Touché

“Risk and ‘The Other’” by Hélène Joffé, published by Cambridge University Press on September 29, 1999, spans 165 pages and is presented in English. This book explores the concept of risk in contemporary society, examining how individuals respond to the pervasive awareness of various risks, from natural disasters to health crises. It delves into the social and cultural contexts that shape personal perceptions of risk, particularly focusing on the phenomenon of perceived invulnerability, often referred to as the ‘not me’ factor.

Readers will find a thorough analysis that employs a social psychological framework to highlight the emotional aspects of risk responses, which have often been overlooked in favor of cognitive approaches. The book addresses key themes in philosophy, psychology, and sociology, making it relevant for post-graduates, academics, and researchers interested in understanding the complexities of risk perception and social behavior. Through its examination of how individuals navigate crises, “Risk and ‘The Other’” contributes to the broader discourse on risk society and personal agency.

Official synopsis Publisher

From earthquakes to epidemics, AIDS to industrial accidents, the mass media continually bring into our daily lives the awareness of risk. But how do people respond to this increased awareness? How do people cope with living in what has been termed ‘the risk society’? This book attempts to explain how, within a given social and cultural context, individuals make sense of impending crisis. In particular it tries to explain the phenomenon of a widespread sense of personal invulnerability when faced with risk: the ‘not me’ factor. Using a social psychological framework it highlights emotional factors which are a key component of responses to risk but have hitherto been neglected due to the tendency of much work on risk to concentrate almost exclusively on cognitive processing. This book will appeal to an international audience of post-graduates, academics and researchers in the areas of risk, psychology, sociology, medical anthropology and psychoanalytic studies.
