Your research has been very successful. You now need to organize your work into a formal paper and submit to an international conference. How do you start writing? How do you organize your paper? Your paper has been accepted for oral presentation. Now you need to prepare. How do you organize your presentation? Prepare viewgraphs? Engage in small talk at the conference reception? Make new friends? The purpose of this multimedia based material is to help you develop the thinking and language skills necessary to be successful in all of the above areas. Just as language involves more than one person, language is best studied in a small group. This textbook, which accompanies 600MB of on-line lectures and animated viewgraphs, is designed to support a small group (3 to 6 individuals) or slightly larger class (18-24 individuals) studying English for the purposes of technical communication. Emphasis is placed on the key skills of one to one oral and written communication with fellow scientists, listening to and giving technical talks, as well as reading and writing scientific papers. In this approach, ten minutes talks are inter-spaced with small group learning activities that guide you in discussing applying what you have just learned.
