Childhood friends, David and Sydney are close, as “thick as thieves” some would say, and their seemingly unbreakable bond comes as no surprise. The prevailing constitution of their Creole family culture established those bonds long before they were even born. As they grow and navigate the obstacles of life within their culture, that bond is tested at every turn, threatened by family lies, secrets, Louisiana magic (Voodoo) and family betrayal. David is struggling with his identity, while his mother, Martha (Martie), go to questionable lengths to keep him from becoming like any man she’d ever known. Sydney’s sweet, protective nature is failing to measure up to her mother’s strength, which is putting her into endless battles of insecurity. Discovering their hidden talents, brought on by the pain and shame of their sufferings, David and Sydney embark on a journey leading to great success-but at deadly costs.
