Mormon is Global

Mormon is Global by A. A. Bastian, published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform on January 28, 2016, is a thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between Mormonism and American culture. This 160-page edition delves into the complexities of how Mormonism is often perceived through an American lens, challenging readers to reconsider this association. The book presents a unique perspective on the influences of Americanism on Mormon practices and beliefs, inviting a broader understanding of the faith beyond its national context.
In this edition, Bastian examines the implications of viewing Mormonism solely through the framework of American culture, suggesting that such a viewpoint may limit legitimate comparisons with other religious theories. The author draws on the concept of ‘reverspectives’ to illustrate how perceptions can shift, prompting readers to question their assumptions about the faith. By engaging with topics in social science and the sociology of religion, this book encourages a re-evaluation of the global dimensions of Mormonism, offering insights that extend beyond traditional narratives.
Official synopsis Publisher
The problem with associating Mormonism and Americanism is that people expect Mormons to behave like Americans. Of course viewing Mormonism in the context of the United States and its influences upon Mormonism is valid and enlightening. While researching in the British Library recently I passed Patrick Hughes’ optical illusionary book shelves, entitled Paradoxymoron hanging on the wall exemplifying his invention of ‘reverspectives’ where what is nearest to you appears furthest away. Viewing Paradoxymoron from new angles allowed it to morph and move. Scholars of Mormonism study America and its influences particularly under the umbrella of Christianity which limit legitimate comparisons to other religious theories and ideas. Perhaps, though, like Hughe’s ‘reverspectives’ illusion, what seems furthest away is actually closest to us and vice versa. What if our understanding of Mormonism as American is actually an optical illusion?
