Editorial overview Touché

Hallo Aurora! by Anne-Catharina Vestly, published by Puffin Books in 1977, is a 160-page work of fiction that explores the life of a young girl named Aurora. As her mother pursues a career as a lawyer, Aurora’s father takes on the role of caregiver, balancing his university studies with household responsibilities. This arrangement initially leaves Aurora feeling isolated and uncertain about her family’s dynamics, especially when she overhears others labeling them as strange.

Throughout the story, readers will find Aurora navigating her new environment, from adjusting to a flat without friends to confronting her fears about the lift. Her experiences at the supermarket, launderette, and baby clinic with her father and baby brother Socrates reveal the joys of family life. As Christmas approaches, Aurora learns to appreciate her unique family situation, discovering that being different can also mean being happy. This edition presents a thoughtful narrative about family roles and personal growth, inviting readers to reflect on the meaning of normalcy and happiness.

Official synopsis Publisher

Aurora’s mother went out to work, and her father stayed at home to look after her and baby Socrates. It worked very well because Father could do his university studies as well as cooking and housekeeping, which he rather enjoyed, and Mother could go on being a lawyer, which she enjoyed, so Aurora didn’t like it much when she heard the other ladies in the flats say her family was strange. But then at first she didn’t like the new flat much either, with no friends and a frightening thing called a lift to deal with, but it was fun helping Father at the supermarket and the launderette or with Socrates at the baby clinic, and even better when Knut helped make the Christmas biscuits. In fact, by the time Christmas came Aurora discovered she was a happy little girl after all, and that her family was not strange, only different, and very nice.
