Editorial overview Touché

Great Witcombe Roman Villa, Gloucestershire by Peter E. Leach, published by British Archaeological Reports in 2000, presents an in-depth examination of the Roman villa discovered in 1818 in Gloucestershire. This edition spans 141 pages and is written in English, detailing the villa’s evolution into a luxurious country house by the later 3rd and 4th centuries, featuring intricate mosaic pavements, baths, and a central gallery.

Readers will find a comprehensive exploration of the villa’s archaeological significance, based on excavations conducted by Ernest Greenfield from 1960 to 1973. The book discusses the villa’s architectural features and suggests its connection to the descendants of a veteran who settled in the area during the establishment of the colonia at Gloucester. Topics such as country homes and Roman antiquities in Great Britain are integral to the narrative, providing context to the findings and historical implications of this notable site.

Official synopsis Publisher

Product Description The Roman villa at Great Witcombe, Gloucestershire was discovered in 1818, and has subsequently been excavated several times, most recently by Ernest Greenfield (1960-73) whose work forms the basis of this book. By the later 3rd and 4th centuries, the villa had developed into a sumptuous country house of a courtyard plan, which included several mosaic pavements, two suites of baths and a prominent colonnaded central gallery and portico. It is suggested here that the villa belonged to the descendants of a veteran, settled on an estate established here at the foundation of the colonia at Gloucester.
