Editorial overview Touché

From Impressionism to Modern Art by Jean Clay, published by Chartwell in 1978, offers a comprehensive exploration of the Impressionist movement that emerged in 19th-century France. This edition spans 320 pages and is presented in English. The book details how a group of Paris-based artists gained prominence through independent exhibitions during the 1870s and 1880s, despite facing significant opposition from the traditional art community. The term “Impressionism” itself originated from a Claude Monet painting, which highlights the movement’s focus on capturing light and ordinary subjects through innovative techniques.

Readers will find an in-depth analysis of the characteristics that define Impressionist painting, such as visible brush strokes, open compositions, and an emphasis on the effects of light and time. Clay also discusses the broader impact of Impressionism, noting its influence on other artistic media, including music and literature. This exploration of art history not only sheds light on the evolution of a significant movement but also contextualizes its lasting effects on modern art.

Official synopsis Publisher

“Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists. Their independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s, in spite of harsh opposition from the conventional art community in France. The name of the style derives from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satirical review published in the Parisian newspaper Le Charivari. Impressionist painting characteristics include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), common, ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. The development of Impressionism in the visual arts was soon followed by analogous styles in other media that became known as impressionist music and impressionist literature.”– Amazon.
