Expositio Notarum

Expositio Notarum by A. C. Dionisotti is a new edition published by Cambridge University Press on September 8, 2022. This 642-page work presents a unique Latin text that initially appears as a disordered list of words with explanations but offers deeper insights into the teaching of Latin shorthand in North Africa around AD 400. The text highlights the role of notarii, or shorthand practitioners, in both state and church contexts, revealing connections to literary Latin and the classical Roman heritage.
Readers will find that this edition not only provides a detailed examination of the manuscript, which traces its lineage back to Anglo-Saxon England by AD 700, but also makes the historical narrative accessible through extensive indices. These indices allow for exploration from various perspectives, including classical and later Latin, as well as linguistic and historical angles. This comprehensive approach aims to enrich the understanding of ancient languages and their evolution within the context of European history.
Official synopsis Publisher
This is the first edition of a Latin text unlike any other surviving one : at first sight an extensive, jumbled list of words with explanations, on closer inspection a window on the teaching of Latin shorthand in North Africa c. AD 400, when we find notarii, those trained in shorthand, prominently employed everywhere in state and church. The text reveals in detail how that training could relate to literary Latin and the classical Roman past. The single manuscript of it in our possession descends from a copy that must have been in Anglo-Saxon England by AD 700, and we can see how it was used for the earliest Latin glossary from that context. The edition seeks to make this story accessible both in general and in detail, with copious indices for those who may wish to consult it from various viewpoints: classical and later Latin, linguistic and historical.
