Editorial overview Touché

Dickens and Thackeray Punishment and Forgiveness by John Robert Reed, published by Ohio University Press in 1995, explores the themes of punishment and forgiveness within the context of nineteenth-century English society. This 504-page work examines how these attitudes, largely influenced by Christianity, manifest in the literature of the time. Reed analyzes the ways in which novelists like Dickens and Thackeray addressed the complexities of moral ideals, particularly through the lens of violent and criminal activities that necessitated correction via poetic justice or human punishment.

Readers will find a well-documented study that highlights the interplay between moral belief and literary expression in the works of Dickens and Thackeray. The book delves into the dilemmas faced by these authors as they navigated societal expectations and the narrative conventions of their time. By reviving moral belief as a significant factor in the analysis of English texts, Reed provides insights into the literary criticism of the era, making this edition a valuable resource for those interested in literary collections and the broader implications of European literature.

Official synopsis Publisher

Attitudes toward punishment and forgiveness in English society of the nineteenth century came, for the most part, out of Christianity. In actual experience the ideal was not often met, but in the literature of the time the model was important. For novelists attempting to tell exciting and dramatic stories, violent and criminal activities played an important role, and, according to convention, had to be corrected through poetic justice or human punishment. Both Dickens’ and Thackeray’s novels subscribed to the ideal, but dealt with the dilemma it presented in slightly different ways.

At a time when a great deal of attention has been directed toward economic production and consumption as the bases for value, Reed’s well-documented study reviving moral belief as a legitimate concern for the analysis of nineteenth-century English texts is particularly illuminating.
