Dealing with that Other God

Dealing with that Other God by Bob Mumford, published by Lifechangers Pub. in November 2018, is a concise exploration of the concept of mammon as presented in Christian theology. This 44-page book delves into the idea that mammon, personified by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, holds significant influence over individuals’ lives, paralleling the authority of God. Mumford invites readers to reflect on the implications of serving two masters and the necessity of making a decisive choice regarding their spiritual allegiance.
In this edition, readers will find a thoughtful examination of the tension between devotion to God and the allure of material wealth. The text emphasizes the importance of recognizing the governing influence of either God or mammon in one’s life, suggesting that loyalty to one inherently diminishes the other. Through this exploration, the book addresses themes of spiritual growth and Christian living, encouraging readers to consider their priorities and the impact of their choices on their faith journey.
Official synopsis Publisher
In this Plumbline I am seeking to explore and unfold with you “that other god.” Its name is mammon. Jesus identified it in His sermon on the mount when he said, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt 6:24).
Two things are important to note in Jesus’ statement. First, Jesus personifies mammon making it equal with God as to its potential of strength of influence on our lives. Second, we can only serve and be ruled by one god at a time; the governing influence of one negates the influence of the other. According to Jesus we must make a choice of which one will be our decisive master.
