Editorial overview Touché

Cyclical Time and Ismaili Gnosis by Corbin, published by Routledge on September 5, 2013, is a scholarly work that presents three of Henry Corbin’s intricate studies, originally delivered at the Eranos conferences in the early 1950s and 1956. This edition, comprising 222 pages, offers an English translation of these complex analyses, which explore the phenomenological correspondences between various spiritual traditions from late Antiquity and Islamic texts preserved in the Ismaili Shi’i tradition.

Readers will find that the book delves into the thematic connections between fragmentary texts from diverse spiritual backgrounds, including Manichaenism and Sassanid Iran, and their parallels in Islamic thought. Corbin’s approach emphasizes a broader understanding of gnosticism, moving beyond the conventional historical definitions to engage with the spiritual themes that resonate across these traditions. This work is relevant for those interested in the intersections of religion, social science, and anthropology, particularly within the context of Shi’a Islam and Ismaili studies.

Official synopsis Publisher

First published in 1983. The volume Cyclical Time and Ismaili Gnosis brings together in English translation three of Henry Corbin’s richest and most complex studies, originally presented at the Eranos conferences of 1951 and 1954 and another conference in 1956. Each of these three relatively early studies is built around a complex, highly creative ‘comparison’ of the phenomenological correspondences between texts (often highly fragmentary) from a vast range of spiritual traditions from late Antiquity (including Manichaenism and the sects of Sassanid Iran) – all ‘gnostic’ in the root Greek sense of that term favoured by Corbin, though not in the narrower historical sense used by most contemporary scholars – and comparable spiritual themes in an equally wide range of Islamic texts eventually preserved in the later Ismaili Shi’i tradition.
