Creativity in Invention and Design

Creativity in Invention and Design by Subrata Dasgupta, published by Cambridge University Press on July 10, 2008, explores the intersection of creativity and technology through a computational lens. This 272-page book examines the historical context of microprogramming, focusing on the contributions of Maurice Wilkes in 1951. The author presents a detailed analysis of the inventive process, offering insights into how creativity can be understood in relation to everyday thinking and reasoning.
Readers will find a thorough discussion of creativity in technology, supported by a case study that highlights the cognitive processes involved in invention. Dasgupta proposes general hypotheses about creativity that align with findings from psychology and history, suggesting that the mechanisms of creative thought may not be fundamentally different from those used in routine reasoning. This edition provides a unique perspective on the social aspects of creativity, making it relevant for those interested in cognitive psychology and the dynamics of technological innovation.
Official synopsis Publisher
In this book, creativity in technology is discussed using a computational approach. Examining an important historical episode in computer technology as a case study, namely, the invention of microprogramming by Maurice Wilkes in 1951, the author presents a plausible explanation of the process by which Wilkes may have arrived at his invention. Based on this case study, the author has also proposed some very general hypotheses concerning creativity that appear to corroborate the findings of some psychologists and historians and then suggests that creative thinking is not significantly different in nature from everyday thinking and reasoning.
