Editorial overview Touché

“Capitalism and Catastrophe” by S. Rousseas, published by Cambridge University Press on July 10, 2008, is a scholarly examination of the dynamics within advanced capitalism. This 156-page work delves into whether systemic collapse is an inevitable outcome of capitalist processes, challenging traditional Marxian theories that emphasize internal contradictions. The author engages with historical perspectives, particularly focusing on Rosa Luxemburg’s theories of imperialism and capital accumulation, as well as Marx’s insights on science and technology.

Readers will find a critical analysis of both Marxist and non-Marxist theories concerning advanced capitalism, including a discussion of Jurgen Habermas’s views on political legitimation. Rousseas posits that the resilience of the capitalist system has often been underestimated, suggesting that this aspect must be considered in any relevant political economy theory for the twentieth century. The book presents a thorough exploration of economic theory, making it a significant contribution to the discourse on capitalism and its challenges.

Official synopsis Publisher

Capitalism and Catastrophe questions whether there are processes in advanced capitalism that lead inevitably to systemic collapse. The author challenges those Marxian theories based on a set of historically evolving ‘internal contradictions’ derived from a purely dialectical analysis of capitalism. In Part I he focuses on the controversy surrounding Rosa Luxemburg’s theories of imperialism and capital accumulation, and on Marx’s treatment of science and technology in the Grundrisse. In Part I I he critically examines neo- and non-Marxian theories of advanced capitalism, in particular the work of Jurgen Habermas regarding the problem of political legitimation in advanced capitalism. Professor Rousseas argues that Marxists have severely underestimated the resilience of the capitalist system, which must be taken into account by any theory of political economy relevant to the twentieth century.
