***NEW BOOK*** IN EXCELLENT UNREAD CONDITION, PRICE HAS BEEN CLIPPED DESCRIPTION OF BOOK SEAFORD is a paradox. It is a town beside the sea, but is not really a seaside town. Lying on the coast between Brighton and Eastbourne, it was a prosperous Cinque Port and a Parliamentary constituency six centuries before the patronage of the Prince Regent and the Duke of Devonshire led to the development of the little villages of Brighthelmstone and Bourne into sophisticated resorts. Seaford’s aristocratic patrons were the Pelhams and when the Duke of Newcastle used the town as one of his his pocket boroughs in the 18th Century his patronage was in the form of “jobs for the boys” in return for votes at elections. A handful of electors returned two members, who included two famous Prime Ministers and, in 1750 the most influential ministers of George II’s government. The author’s very readable text, with it’s profusion of pictures, recalls bygone Seaford in a compelling way that will appeal to many residents and visitors as well as to all those with an interest in Sussex history.
