Brat agrees – Alec will coach Brat on the family details and Brat will give him a share of the money. “Patrick” arrives at Latchetts. Simon seems to accept him. But Brat believes that Simon knows that “Patrick” is a fake. Then Simon tells Brat he in fact murdered Patrick. Brat decides to investigate Patrick’s disappearance at a quarry where he believes Patrick’s body is hidden. Simon is waiting for him and tries to kill him. In the struggle they fall into the quarry and Simon is killed. Patrick’s bones are found. Great-uncle Charles Ashby arrives. He recognizes Brat as the son of Walter Ashby, a long-dead cousin.
