I need everyone to stand up and pay attention real quick, because The Reparations Club is that place!!nnThis is not just a bookstore. It’s a community space, a cultural gem, and honestly one of the best vibes I’ve experienced in LA in a long time. Black-owned, woman-owned, LGBTQ+ affirminggg, and genuinely welcoming in a way that feels natural, not performative.nnThe book selection is unreal. Books by Black authors across every genre, plus Latin, Caribbean, and LA voices that feel deeply intentional and thoughtfully curated. This is the kind of place where you come in “just to browse” and somehow walk out with a stack you’re already emotionally attached to.nnWhat really sets this spot apart is the way they build community. Twice a month they host these silent but together reading sessions, where a whole group of people come in, grab a seat, and just read quietly alongside each other. No pressure, no awkwardness, just calm collective energy. Sometimes there are guest authors. Sometimes there’s live music during a break. It feels grounding in a way that’s hard to explain until you’re there.nnAnd starting January 2026, they’re launching a monthly book club, which feels like the most obvious next step because this space already feels like home for readers.nnParking is street parking only, but depending on the time of day, it’s really not bad. Seriously worth it for the visit!nnThe staff deserves their own paragraph. Warm, kind, actually engaged, and happy to talk books without being weird about it. No gatekeeping. No attitude. Just good people who clearly care about what they’re building.nnAs Toni Morrison said, “If there’s a book you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”nnThis place feels like it exists to protect those stories and the people who carry them.nnBottom line: go. Linger. Read. Come back again. Bring a friend. This spot is special, and LA is better because it exists.nnFive stars, no debate. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I came in today to purchase a few titles and to inquire about a specific book. The staff member who rang me up was professional and kind (she had an Afro).nnHowever, another staff member was noticeably rude and dismissive when I asked a simple question about the restroom—despite speaking warmly and helpfully to the customer right before me who asked the same thing. That customer was white; I am Black.nn(The owner replied, denied my experience and said there were over 100 customers present- when I arrived at around 11:15 there only about 8 people in the store. I’ve attached another photo to verify so it doesn’t seem like I’m writing this review out of spite. Regardless of how many people present, all customers should be treated with respect and professionalism. I also gently and respectfully encourage them to expand their definition of ‘accountability ’ and what it looks like in practice.)nnI had planned to stay for the event with Dr. Nedra Glover Tawwab, but instead I practiced her teachings in real time by setting a boundary and leaving the store immediately after my purchase.nI also plan to request a refund for the title that is currently back-ordered.nnI chose to support this store because of its stated mission and because I want to support independent businesses rather than Amazon—so this experience was especially disappointing.nnIronically one of the books I purchased is The Delectable Negro, a seminal text about the literal consumption, extraction and exploitation of Black bodies under slavery and the current context of cultural consumption.nnA reparations-centered space must embody equity, care, and belonging in everyday practice—not just in its mission. Otherwise, it risks replicating the very extractive and harmful systems it claims to challenge.

Amazing experience! Highly recommend checking out this bookstore. It is beautiful, full of amazing products, in addition to the books. They had exactly what I needed and were friendly, communicative, and the process of ordering and going to pick up was easy. Even got this really fun bookmark for free 🙂
