Between my quest to visit bookshops in Arizona, combined with it being Black History Month, I headed to the black-owned Grassrootz bookshop.nnIt's a small shop but full of energy and culture, felt even in the quiet opening hour on a Friday. I wasn't looking for anything in particular other than to support an independently owned business. I looked through the cute children's corner, the cookbooks, history, music, and more. The book that caught my eye and that I ended up purchasing: When Broadway was Black. They also have a seed library, art to purchase, and more.nnGrassroots is located in downtown Phoenix and is not only a bookstore but a juice bar. Unfortunately, I was there early, and the food and drink window was not open at the time, but it's just a good excuse to return. They offer smoothies, fresh juices, coffee, and tea. The employees coming in were jovial and went out of their way to greet me across the room.nnAs I checked out, the owner and I chatted about other bookshops that we've visited in town. He was super friendly, the kind of owner that truly takes pride in their business and make you want to support them. Per their social media, it looks like they host regular chess nights and have an upcoming open mic night tomorrow.nnGet out and support local Black owned businesses.

The most enriching atmosphere I've experienced in a long while. Great books, sweet coffees, teas and juices, not to mention weekly chess games, an art museum and a host of literary events that bring great thinkers together.
