While planning my Boston trip, I intentionally mapped out stops around locations featuring the mini surprise art print vending machines by Anastasia Inciardi, which is how I ended up at Beacon Hill Books & Café. Even though the vending machine was empty when I visited, it’s worth noting that these are typically restocked — they’re just very popular, so there’s always a chance they may be empty depending on timing.nnEach art print costs $1, so it’s a good idea to bring quarters. That was part of my plan, even though I happened to arrive on a day when the machine had already been cleared out.nnThat said, I’m still really glad I went. The bookstore itself is charming and thoughtfully curated, set inside a narrow, historic building filled with books across every genre. Browsing the space felt like an experience in itself. I also picked up a small postcard featuring a custom alphabet illustrated with Beacon Hill imagery, and it’s such a cute little keepsake from the visit.nnThe café looked lovely as well, though it was a busy Saturday and quite full. This is a very popular spot, and because the space is compact, it can feel a bit tight when crowded — but the warmth, charm, and attention to detail make it well worth the stop.nnEven though I initially visited for the art vending machine, the overall experience made it a worthwhile stop. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoy independent bookstores, charming details, and exploring walkable neighborhoods like Beacon Hill, which is full of great shops, restaurants, and places to wander.

Fantastic, knowledgeable waitstaff at this busy cafe. Go down stairs to see IG you can be seated for walk ins. I highly recommend a reservation. I had an earl grey tea and scones. Scones are small but lovely. I will return for high tea.

I loved everything about this place. The quaint cafe below the three story bookshop, the friendly staff, signed book by author, the aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, and the CAFE! I got an oat milk cappuccino with Vermont maple syrup (best I’ve ever had) and morning glory scone (delicious!).

Such a special bookstore. I was amazed at the selection and the interior—it was really unlike any bookstore I have been to because it was so aesthetic and cozy. Also a very special kids book area upstairs with a train running around the top. A dreamy place to spend some time—highly recommend checking it out!

BHB&C (Beacon Hill Books & Cafe) is one of the most charming places we’ve visited in 59 years of travel. The combination of good food, good books, and great atmosphere puts this place into a league of its own. The hostess, Leslee, actually found a place for us in spite of us not having reservations. And the food was fabulous — literally the best quiche I’ve had in years! Our waiter Pablo added the perfect ingredient of knowing the details of everything on offer so that we couldn’t help but make a good decision. The bookstore’s thoughtfully provisioned shelves proved irresistible after dinner. My wife and I heartily recommend Beacon Hill Books & Cafe for locals and travelers alike. You won’t be disappointed!
