Around Whitby The Second Selection

Following his extremely popular first volume, Around Whitby, Des Sythes compiled a second volume of old photographs of Whitby and the surrounding area, using material which has never, or only really, been seen in print before. Over 200 fascinating images are used, all from the archives of Whitby Museum, formed by the Literary and Philosophical Society. Again we are treated to long lost scenes, from the last century and early this century, in the West and East Whitby, around the harbour and around the villages close to Whitby. In addition the people of Whitby are well represented; including the workers, those who gained fame for their work or their deeds and of course the character – such as ‘Tricky’ Ann – that are a part of the make-up of every community. Whitby’s fishing heritage, both the romantic and the realistic, plays a large part here as it has in the lives of generations of Whitby folk. The work of many notable photographers has been included within this selection of pictures, including that of Frank Sutcliffe, Hugh Lambert-Smith and Tom Watson. Through their fine photographs the reader will be transported back in time to days when the streets were empty of any but horse-drawn or pedestrian traffic.
