Official synopsis Publisher

We all enjoy a nostalgic look at the past from time to time and a collection of old photographs of our town is just about the best way of stimulating and satisfying this interest. In this book there are around 200 old photographs of Huddersfield and district taken over a period of the last century or so in this area’s interest. The collection includes scenes taken of fine buildings in the town centre and well-dressed Edwardian ladies strolling past them; the highly polished fire engine photographed for posterity and shop windows displaying goods that we couldn’t buy today. Perhaps, though, it is the pictures of ordinary people working and going about their daily tasks that give us the best picture of what life was like in days gone by. As well as Huddersfield itself the authors have included a selection of photographs showing many of the surrounding communities too. We see Milnsbridge, Moldgreen, Lockwood, Shepley and Kirkburton, all represented, and scenes of the Colne Valley showing many features now gone, such as the canal running through the middle of Slaithwaite village. Huddersfielsd is fortunate in that it has been home to a succession of good local photographers who recorded scenes and people of their period for us to enjoy today
