A Painting in Provence by John Nicholson is a poignant narrative set against the backdrop of World War II, published by XLIBRIS AU on May 19, 2022. This edition spans 182 pages and is presented in English. The story begins in August 1944, as a noble family in Provence protects a young Jewish boy named David from the impending threat of fascist forces. Following a tragic turn of events, David survives and finds refuge in a Benedictine monastery, while the treasures of his family’s chateau are stolen. The narrative unfolds decades later when David’s past leads to a series of unsettling incidents that prompt an Australian journalist, Tony Britt, to investigate.

Readers will find a rich exploration of historical themes, including the persecution of Jews during the Nazi occupation and the legacy of the Vichy government. As Tony and his companion Jo travel through Provence, they engage with various historical and cultural sites, including a synagogue and an art historian, while the beauty of the region and the timeless love of Petrarch for Laura serve as recurring motifs. This edition invites readers to reflect on the intertwining of personal and historical narratives, as well as the enduring impact of the past on the present.
