Mrtve duse su poema sastavljena od tri dela, s tim da je u drugom delu ostalo samo 5 odlomaka, a o trećem nema nikakvog zapisa.Prvi deo romana Nikolaj je pisao skoro sedam godina u Parizu, Rimu i Svajcarskoj. Zbog psihički sve nestabilnijeg stanja, spalio je drugi deo romana i nakon toga ubrzo umro.Mrtve duse predstavljaju drustveni roman kroz koji je Gogolj hteo da prikaže stanje tadasnje birokratske i feudalne Rusije. Glavni lik je nekadasnji carinski službenik Pavel Ivanovič Čičikov, koji je zbog toga sto je sarađivao sa svercerima, morao da napusti posao koji je radio.
