Oregon & Northwestern Railroad by Jeff Moore, published by Arcadia Publishing Library Editions in November 2013, offers a detailed exploration of a significant chapter in the history of railroads in the Pacific Northwest. This edition, comprising 130 pages, delves into the establishment of a common carrier railroad in Oregon, initiated by a major timber sale in 1922. The narrative follows the journey of the Fred Herrick Lumber Company and its subsequent challenges, leading to the involvement of the Edward Hines Lumber Company and the operational history of the Oregon & Northwestern Railroad.

Readers will find a thorough account of the railroad’s role in transporting logs, lumber, and livestock between Burns and Seneca, Oregon, from 1929 until 1984. The book highlights the economic and logistical aspects of operating a railroad in some of the most remote areas of the state, providing insights into the timber industry and its impact on local communities. With a focus on history and regional development, this work serves as a valuable resource for those interested in the historical context of railroads in the United States, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.

Official synopsis Publisher

In 1922, the US Forest Service offered one of the largest timber sales in the agency’s history, encompassing 890 million board feet of mostly Ponderosa pine timber in the mountains north of Burns, Oregon. Among other requirements, the sale terms required the successful bidder to build and operate 80 miles of common carrier railroad through some of the most remote and undeveloped country in the state. The Fred Herrick Lumber Company and its Malheur Railroad initially won the bidding, only to lose it when a crash in the lumber market forced the company into insolvency. The Edward Hines Lumber Company of Chicago picked up the pieces, and from 1929 until 1984, its subsidiary Oregon & Northwestern Railroad made a living hauling logs, lumber, and occasional livestock between Burns and Seneca, Oregon.
