Editorial overview Touché

In Breaking of Bread by P. J. FitzPatrick, published by Cambridge University Press in May 1993, explores the concept of transubstantiation within the Roman Catholic Church and its evolving significance in contemporary worship. This first edition, comprising 407 pages, delves into the complexities surrounding the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, addressing how recent changes in worship practices have impacted theological discussions.

The book presents a critical examination of transubstantiation and its alternatives, arguing that both share fundamental confusions that separate appearance from reality. FitzPatrick emphasizes the importance of understanding the Eucharist as a rite, highlighting the need for a thorough reflection on this topic amidst ongoing changes in Roman Catholic practices. Readers will find a thoughtful discourse on key issues in Christian theology, particularly concerning sacraments and rituals, as the author seeks to provide clarity in a time of theological transition.

Official synopsis Publisher

For many years, the Roman Catholic Church has used the term ‘transubstantiation’ to express the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Of late, however, although proposed replacements have not found favour, the term itself no longer has the place and setting it once had, and debates about transubstantiation have died down. This book is written in the belief that reflection upon the matter is indispensable. It proposes that transubstantiation and its proposed replacements are all fundamentally similar in their confusions – they divorce appearance from reality because they fail to do justice to the Eucharist as a rite. The changes in Roman Catholic worship have sharpened the need for an account that will do justice to this, and the book is an attempt to provide one. It is also an endeavour to discuss central problems in the Roman Church today.
