Trouble with Toads by Peter L. Ward, published by Trafford Publishing in December 2013, is a humorous fiction that explores the complexities of a rural English village in the twenty-first century. Set against the backdrop of East Sussex’s rolling hills and woodlands, the narrative reveals a community rife with bigotry, selfishness, and a struggle for power. As local democracy is dismantled by a new right-wing government, the village of Denbridgehurst faces external threats from foreign investors eager to exploit its mineral wealth, leading to a clash between local interests and outside ambitions.

Readers will find a tale that delves into the dynamics of community and authority, as four elderly women rise to power and conspire with Russian oligarchs to manipulate the village’s resources. The story unfolds with a sense of urgency as the national government proposes a new motorway that threatens the village’s historical church. In response, conservation organizations are enlisted to protect endangered species, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding drama. This edition, comprising 180 pages, presents a vivid depiction of the tensions between local and global forces, highlighting the absurdities that arise when ambition and greed collide in a seemingly tranquil setting.
