Le Livre Blanc by Jean Cocteau, published by Peter Owen Limited in March 2000, is a New Ed edition comprising 76 pages in English. This work, originally published anonymously, explores themes of homosexual love through a semi-autobiographical narrative. Cocteau presents the experiences of a young man navigating his romantic relationships with various boys and men in the early 20th century, reflecting on his struggles for self-acceptance and fulfillment.

Readers will find a poignant depiction of the protagonist’s journey, marked by self-deception and a quest for identity, as he initially seeks connection through women and the church. This edition is fully illustrated, featuring woodcuts by the author, which enhance the text’s exploration of LGBTQ+ themes and historical context within European literature.

Official synopsis Publisher

Le Livre Blanc, a “white paper” on homosexual love, was first published anonymously in France by Cocteau’s contemporary Maurice Sachs and was at once decried as by the critics as obscene. It is now possible to issue it under Cocteau’s name. The semi-autobiographical narrative describes a youth’s love affairs with a succession of boys and men during the early years of this century. The young man’s self-deceptive attempts to find fulfilment, first through women and then by way of the church, are movingly conveyed; the book ends with a strong plea for male homosexuality to be accepted without censure. The book is fully illustrated and includes many woodcuts by the author.
