Editorial overview Touché

English Tilers by Elizabeth S. Eames, published by University of Toronto Press in January 1992, offers a detailed exploration of the vibrant world of medieval tiles. This subsequent edition spans 72 pages and is presented in English. The book delves into the history and craftsmanship of brightly colored tiles that adorned the floors of wealthy and ecclesiastical patrons, highlighting the transition from commissioned artistry to commercial production by individual tilers.

Readers will find an insightful examination of the techniques used in tile making and decoration, as well as the economic aspects of the tilers’ trade. Eames draws on material from her earlier work, English Medieval Tiles, while incorporating new research to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these decorative elements transformed spaces in manor houses, merchant homes, and parish churches. The book touches on themes of crafts and hobbies, pottery and ceramics, and the social dynamics of medieval Europe, making it a valuable resource for those interested in archaeology and history.

Official synopsis Publisher

Brightly coloured tiles, often decorated with enchanting scenes or designs, are among the most common and fascinating survivals from the medieval period. When decorated floor tiles were first introduced, tilers were specially commissioned to create elaborate pavements for wealthy, royal, and ecclesiastical patrons. Before long, individual tilers branched out to manufacture decorated tiles and market them commercially. Soon, manor houses, merchant’s houses, and parish churches were enlivened with thses colourful decorated floors.

Drawing partly on the material from her previous book, English Medieval Tiles (now out of print) and partly on new research, the author explains how the tiles were made and decorated, how the tilers combined the production of elaborate floor tiles with plainer, more functional roof tiles, and how they earned their living.
