Rote-Meto Comparative Dictionary

Rote-Meto Comparative Dictionary by Owen Edwards, published by Australian National University Press in 2021, is a comprehensive resource consisting of 452 pages in English. This dictionary offers a detailed reconstruction of the Rote-Meto languages of western Timor, presenting 1,174 reconstructions to Proto-Rote-Meto and providing supporting evidence from modern Rote-Meto languages. It also includes insights into how these forms relate to other languages, including Proto-Malayo-Polynesian etyma and cognates from the region.
Readers will find that the dictionary is structured with three introductory chapters that guide them through its use and the data sources employed. The second chapter offers a synchronic overview of the Rote-Meto languages, while the third discusses their historical context, including sound correspondences and subgrouping within the Malayo-Polynesian family. Additionally, the dictionary features two finder-lists: one translating English to Rote-Meto and another detailing Austronesian reconstructions with Rote-Meto reflexes, making it a valuable tool for those studying linguistics and foreign language reference.

The first chapter contains a guide to using the dictionary as well as discussion of the data sources. The second chapter provides a short synchronic overview of the Rote-Meto langauges.
