POWERHOUSE Arena

Beautiful store with a thoughtful curated selection of books, lots of contemporary artists, writers, and poets. Great to discover something new. Also, had Leuchturm notebooks my favorite and a great selection of pens. Took them out to Pebble beach after to draw the brooklyn bridge.

I stopped into PowerHouse Arena a few weeks ago on my trip to NY looking for a children's book for my niece here at the recommendation of a friend and there were 2 men at the bar openly yelling obscenities at each other with multiple little kids in the store the whole time I was there. I couldn't stand to stay for more than 10 minutes because of how disturbing and inappropriate this was and even though I found a good book for her I ended up buying it elsewhere because I could not in good conscience give them my money after seeing that. However the staff were very nice and seemed apologetic for this behavior…would not recommend visiting or supporting such an unprofessional and aggressive company!!

Wonderful book shop and cafe under the bridge. Went to a book reading here for Holler Rat by Anya Liftig (give me anything about growing up in Kentucky!). Really cozy and a great crowd! Love the book, too!

Well before their well known anti-Semitic incident, I also faced hatred for asking for books that were looking at Israel in a better light than most of their books were. It's too bad, as I enjoy supporting local business. I did let everyone in my condo building know about it….nUpdate- the owner's response is not valid/ as they didn't witness the absolute disgust and hate on their workers' faces. I guess you had to be there. Plenty of Jews in this neighborhood I am sure have asked.

I’ve been there a zillion times, and it’s always well organized and finely tuned to the intelligentsia of NYC. Also fun for kids.
