E. T. A. Hoffman: Born January 1776 in Prussia, Hoffman professionally became a jurist, but he was enthralled with the arts. His famous novella, The Nutcracker and Mouse-King, would go on to inspire Alexandre Dumas and become the story of one of the most famous ballets in the world, The Nutcracker. E. T. A. Hoffman died at the age of 46 in June 1822.
