Editorial overview Touché

Euripides: Phaethon by Euripides, published by Cambridge University Press on May 20, 2004, is a bilingual edition comprising 268 pages. This work presents the surviving text of the fragmentary play Phaethon, relying on two primary sources: a manuscript from around A.D. 500 and a third-century B.C. papyrus that includes a significant portion of the parodos. The edition includes a comprehensive examination of the manuscript evidence, along with decipherments and a text of the play.

Readers will find an in-depth analysis of the Phaethon myth as it appears in classical literature, supported by an exegetical commentary and prolegomena. The edition also features appendices that discuss the historical context and literary significance of the play. Topics such as drama, literary criticism, and philosophy are explored, providing a rich framework for understanding this ancient work.

Official synopsis Publisher

The surviving text of the fragmentary Phaethon of Euripides depends chiefly on two sources: two pages from a Euripidean manuscript, written about A.D. 500, and a papyrus of the third century B.C., which contains a substantial part of the parodos. These sources are supplemented by a number of citations in classical authors and by a recently published fragmentary hypothesis. Professor Diggle has examined all the manuscript evidence and offers many decipherments. He gives a text of the play and of the hypothesis, an exegetical commentary, prolegomena and appendices, in which he discusses the treatment of the Phaethon myth in classical literature and attempts a reconstruction of the plot of the play.
