I didn’t really grow up reading the likes of Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson or any of those other poets that may be on others’ top 5 lists. I grew up listening to the greatest idols of many young boys that age-LL Cool J, Will Smith, Tupac and other lyricists who speak their truth through music. Back in the day, that was how we wrote poetry. That was how we spoke feelings. We got together with friends and spit bars about reality, the world around us and how we perceived life. I know those rappers were a huge inspiration for how I came to love poetry and writing.
