Cedar Grove by Philip Edward Jaeger, published by Arcadia Publishing in 2000, is an illustrated exploration of a community located in the Peckman River Valley, just fifteen miles west of New York City. This book primarily focuses on Cedar Grove in the early 1900s while also chronicling significant events and notable personalities through the end of the millennium. It highlights the town’s agricultural roots and its historical importance, including its connection to the Meadowbrook and its nationwide radio broadcasts.

Readers will find a detailed account of Cedar Grove’s rich history, including the invention of the crossword puzzle by resident Arthur Wynne in 1913, along with his original puzzle for readers to solve. The book also touches on the contributions of Allen B. Du Mont, an electronics pioneer who conducted research in Cedar Grove during the early 1930s. Additionally, it addresses the impact of World War II on the community, particularly the enemy propaganda that sought to undermine the significance of the Meadowbrook. With 128 pages of historical photography and narratives, this edition provides a comprehensive look at the town’s legacy and its role in American history.

Official synopsis Publisher

Cedar Grove is situated in the Peckman River Valley
between the First and Second Watchung Mountains. Located only fifteen miles west of New York City, the
area remained a farming community until well into the
twentieth century. While generally focusing on the town in the early 1900s, Cedar Grove also chronicles significant events and personalities through the end of the millennium. Best known for being the home of the Meadowbrook and its nationwide radio broadcasts, Cedar Grove is also the birthplace of other historical events. The crossword puzzle, a source of pleasure for tens of millions, was invented by Cedar Grove resident Arthur Wynne in 1913. Wynne’s first puzzle is included for those who would like to solve it. Allen B. Du Mont, an electronics pioneer, conducted research on cathode ray tubes in the garage of his Cedar Grove home during the early 1930s
and later created a television network bearing his name.Although the Meadowbrook is remembered by many,
few realize that during World War II enemy propaganda
attempted to demoralize our fighting forces by falsely proclaiming that the famous roadhouse had burned down. Such was its importance to America’s youth in those years.
